As Election Day 2020 fast approaches, we find ourselves continually bombarded with news, town halls, debates, protests, and calls to vote, regardless of partisanship.  We are each encouraged to exercise our civic duty by casting our support for that person or entity we feel will best propel our nation forward.  Forward in dealing with race relations, a pandemic, an economic crisis, unemployment, decisions to open or close schools at all levels, health insurance, the environment, etc. There is an inordinate amount of emotion regarding the unknown surrounding this election season. A recent survey from the American Psychological Association and Harris Poll found that 68% of American adults say that the upcoming U.S. presidential election is a significant source of stress in their life. Although we do not know who will win the election, we know that some members of our constituency will be elated and excited, while others will be disappointed and emotional.

As healthcare professionals, we are required to prioritize the needs of our patients, trainees, colleagues with insufficient thought on how we will address our individual feelings on November 4th.

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will host a series of dialogue sessions before and after the election. Our goal is to provide a safe space to define our feelings; challenge ourselves to promote professional relationships with those with differing political views; and a become a shared source of community resilience, despite the outcome of the election.  Please consider joining us if you would like to participate in a facilitated conversation centered around moving past the election.
