Visiting Medical Student Scholarship

Goal of the Scholarship

  • Encourage students to consider residency at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine Tucson
  • Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for students who have experienced cumulative adversities in their path to medicine.
  • Provide a stipend of up to $1,500 to help offset cost of housing and travel.

 

Who should apply

  • Out of state applicants who have been accepted to participate in a four-week visiting elective at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson
  • Applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to increasing diversity in medicine and advancing health equity.
  • Fourth year medical student in good standing at an accredited U.S. allopathic/osteopathic medical school, who have completed all required clerkships throguh their home institution prior to begining their visiting student elective.

 

How to Apply

The following documents must be submitted to the Department Elective Director:

  • Application form
  • Brief statement (500 word limit) that describes your interest in attending the University of Arizona, and explains how you have demonstrated a commitment to increasing diversity in medicine and advancing health equity.
  • One letter of recommendation from a clinical faculty member
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of good standing from your current medical school
  • Official medical school transcript

Please note that all documents and materials must be submitted by email to the department elective director for your application to be accepted.

 

What the scholarship provides

  • $1500 stipend to defray travel expenses such as transportation, lodging, and food (Scholarship funds will be awarded after submission of appropriate receipts)
  • Parking near the hospital 
  • Resident and faculty mentor assignments 
  • Networking opportunities with ODEI and medical school affinity groups
  • Participation in this scholarship program guarantees an interview for residency program but does not guarantee a position

 

2024-2025 application cycle

  • Scholarship cycle opens on April 1st
  • Scholarship applications will be accepted for rotations in July, August, September, October, November, December, and January.
  • Applications will be reviewed and individual departments will select their recipients.
