Success Story: Patricia Nez Henderson

Why did you choose your specific health professional career? For the past ten years I have worked in tobacco control and prevention. I enjoy every aspect of my work because it allows me to work directly with Native American communities while using all the skills I have learned in medicine and public health.

Why did you choose your specific health professional career? I choose the area of pediatrics due to my interest in the health care needs of children. During my youth, I recall not seeing many Native Americans in the health field, especially as physicians.

Why did you choose your specific health professional career? I chose surgery because I like how surgeons approach problems; it fit well with my methods of problem solving and it is a very practical, concrete way to deal with complex medical issues

Why did you choose your specific health professional career? When I was in medical school, I wanted to choose a specialty that would be broad and give me opportunities to go into a sub specialty, so internal medicine was that field.


Success Story: Nazhone Yazzie

Why did you choose your specific health professional career? I am pursuing a residency in general surgery. I actually remember wanting to become a surgeon since high school. It is the hands-on approach of this field in medicine in which you use your hands to sew, to repair, to visually see things and to fix them.


AHSC Awarded Grant to Reduce Health Disparities

The $1.25 million grant will reduce health disparities through impactful research and the development of the next generation of physician-scientists through the Arizona Pride-25 Advanced Health Disparities Training Program in Heart, Lung, Blood and Sleep Conditions.
