The UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson is dedicated to reducing healthcare disparities across the practice of medicine. The goal of these health equity rounds is to provide examples of when implicit bias and/or structural racism may have impacted patient care and outcomes. Moreover, a review of evidence-based best practices and recommendations in addressing bias are also presented.
What are Health Equity Grand Rounds?
- Health Equity grand rounds, developed by residents in Boston Medical Center, focus on the impact of structural barriers and implicit biases on patient care and outcomes.
- These grand rounds are presented in a M&M fashion emphasizing how implicit bias affected patient care outcomes using a specific case.
Objectives
- Identify specific case(s) that serve as examples that disproportionately affect underserved and vulnerable populations
- Identify how implicit bias, or structural racism may have changed the clinical case and how we could improve.
- Explain effective education, training, research, clinical care, and community outreach for improving health equity in these specific cases.
- Provide evidence-based methodology for addressing these issues through institutional policy, or education.
